The reason why your graphics card is doing is that is because; The solder joint of GPU Chip did lose some of its connections from their actual space (mainly on the printed circuit board). Yes, that happens a lot with old GPUs, due to overuse of a card for a long time or having a bad moistures environment lifespan. The main thing is, graphics cards are so expensive and something it’s kind of hard to bear it when we already running on a low budget.
#How Reflow Can Help?
Reflow soldering is the most common process used by the manufacturers and repair shops to mount the electronic components on a PCB. Reflow is the stage of “reflowing solder” where the ‘solder’ or ‘solder paste’ changes its state from Solid to Liquid, at high heat temperature to make a complete and proper solder joint on PCB (printed board circuits). And in this tutorial, we are using the baking method of Reflow by providing the direct heat of 200-degree Celsius to Printed Circuit Board to re-join its broken connections by melting the solder underneath the GPU Chip. To know more about the baking method of Reflow or need to know what actually reflow is and need some proper guidance about it, then check out this link which you might have interest in; » What Is Reflow? – Explained With Procedure Note 1: If your Graphics Card is still in under warranty, then according to me, I don’t think you should try to do anything on your own. Just remove the card from the computer and give it to the manufacturer’s service center or maybe you can also try to call the manufacturer’s customer care for all the extra support. Note 2: There is no guarantee that you can fix your card perfectly, but this tutorial does works 90% for all time. Note 3: If you’re having any problem like black blank display problem with your computer, then I think you should need to try this first; » How To Fix No Display Computer’s Motherboard Problem? #So Let’s See How To Bake Our Graphics Card
Step 1 – Remove The Faulty Graphic Card: First, you’ll need to open your computer’s casing by unscrewing the side cover. After that, unscrew the graphics card screw and remove your card gently from its PCI Slot, without creating any damages. Step 2 – Remove Graphic Card’s Heatsink: After when you remove your card, then now it’s time put your card upside-down on a safe surface (Like towel or something) and unscrew all the screws who’s holding the GPU’s Heat Sink. Step 3 – Clean Your Graphics Card: Cleaning is a very important and main thing to do, before performing any type of Reflow process. If you didn’t clean the GPU’s Printed Circuit Board, then it’s quite possible that the dust will stick with the soldering metal while between the heating process. Proper clearing does necessary and make sure you can’t skip it too; The best way to clean a PCB is by using an ‘Air Pressure Dust Remover Can’ which can remove all the dirt even without touching the PCB. Then, use a 99% (or 90%+ can work too) Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the reaming dirt particles and metal corrosion. And just like always, of course yes, only use a soft brush and don’t try to make things easier for you by using your old filthy toothbrush, which can hurt all the tiny resistors & capacitors of your GPU, and can lead to the Hardware Death. Step 4 – Preheat Your Oven: Now you’ll need to preheat your Toaster or Grill Oven at the minimum temperature of 100 Degree C for 2-3 min and that will make your Reflow process more effective. Make sure you don’t use any Microwave Oven because it can also damage the PCB too. Step 5 – Get Things Ready: Now put your Graphics Card on a tray and give it some support by using some foil paper balls, so the other side can be safe too.
Step 6 – Put The Tray into The Oven: Finally, it’s time to put the tray into the oven so it can reflow and get better. The temperature and timing can’t be the same for the whole process.
So first, you’ll need to put the tray and close the oven’s door and set the timer for about 2 min at 200 degrees C, and after when the 2 minutes get completed then just increase the heat for about 230 Degree C for 2 more minutes. Caution – Don’t Over Heat the Card. Step 7 – Let The Card Cool Down: After 4 or 5 min of baking, don’t just suddenly take out your graphics card. You’ll only need to open the Oven’s door and leave it for a while to cool it down. Step 8 – Get The Card Ready: After when your card cools down, put the new thermal paste on the GPU chip and then screw back it’s Fan & Heat Sink. Step 9 – Testing: At last, now it’s time to the test your Graphic Card is working properly or not. Note: In case, if your graphics card is still not working then you can also try to repeat this process again, and this time you might need to increase the heating time for 2 more minutes at 250 degrees Celsius.
